Miami Beach has relatively few great areas for snorkeling. Captain's RJ Arvove and Mike Beach have selected the best of the local sites. They include:
This wreck, in only 6-10-ft (2-3-m) of water, is of a 154-ft (47-m) 366-ton steel hulled two-masted racing schooner that was built in Kiel, Germany in 1908. By the late 1920's she was neglected and eventually sank around 1930.
The Half Moon lies imbedded in white sand on a shallow shoal off Key Biscayne, listing slightly to port, bow pointing southward. No traces of her masts remain and the starboard side has been broken outward, probably the result of a larger vessel colliding with the wreck. The yacht's internal framing is readily apparent, as are the forward anchor chain fittings and the bowsprit collar. The Half Moon is now home to many species of tropical fish, invertebrates, sponges, and corals.
This wreck provides a fascinating location for snorkelers and SCUBA divers alike. The timing of the trip is scheduled to coincide with the slack high or low water tide. Please check the calendar for the up-to-date schedule.
This is a real dive of a bar ... but with plenty of redeeming features! Sunk as a promotion during the "Sinko de Mayo festival" in May 2000. The 10,000 pound concrete bar was built for Jose Cuervo and then donated to the Artificial Reef program. Located just offshore in Miami Beach, this is another intriguing and unusual site for snorkelers and divers to interact with tropical fish.
Visibility depends upon the prevailing weather and the Gulf Stream, but generally averages 50-70-ft. Water temperature can be as low as 72F (25C) from January to March, and as high as 85F (33C) from July to September.
