Prometeo Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV)

Prometeo Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV)Prometeo entered into production in 1991. It offers the best that can be offered, with a great performance and a price comparable with that of recording video systems with inferior characteristics and qualities. This is possible because of the use of standard parts among the different models. The system is robust and compact and can be transported easily inside your car. Launched from a small boat it can be operated by one or two people with the use of a small generator. The modular system, built with the open frame technique, allows for the installation and removal of vast selection of accessories or the replacement of damaged parts while underway. A mechanical arm, sonar, special video cameras, and stronger motors can be installed by the operator without the need of a specialist. The horizontal position of the props at over one foot from the bottom practically eliminates the risk of murky water even when operating in the presence of mud.

The Prometeo's reliable, light ROV construction with powerful thrusters allows operation in currents up to a depth of 975-ft ( 300- m). The thin, Kevlar reinforced coaxial cable with little current drag for the transmission of all signals, including power supply, is neutrally buoyant. The mushroom shape provides a low center of gravity for calm video images due to unique navigational stability

PERFORMANCE

Four speeds for the horizontal propulsion, four for the vertical with ten possible combinations of thrust between the motors offer the operator maneuverability beyond comparison with an intuitive approach to simple and functional controls placed on a fiberglass enclosure. Safe and well insulated, it allows to be used with wet hands.

The main purpose of a R.O.V. is to provide impeccable images in the ever changing environmental conditions. The images are the only comparison that allows for a sense of perception and space in the environment where the operator interacts with the vehicle. The electronic structure of Prometeo fulfills this purpose. Positioned in the fulcrum of the horizontal thrust is a high quality video camera with grand angular lens that provides for a field view of 80 degrees allowing for a good peripheral vision, even in murky waters. Two 50 watt halogen spotlights with a field of 60 degrees can handle perfectly the view taken by a camera with a better sensibility of 0.5 lux. A fair compromise between the power of the spotlights and the sensibility of the camera prevent the `fog effect' caused by the suspended particles directly in front of the lens, typical of systems of higher illuminating power. Prometeo is also ready for more fixed or rotating cameras, besides the main one, installed by the operator depending on the application. The images received can be viewed on a single screen, using the `parallel channels' technique where the signals from the different cameras are broadcasted contemporarily through the umbilical cord single coaxial conductor. The great quality of the high frequency broadcasting sys. guarantees perfect video recording; plus, the small diameter of the cable offers little resistance to water currents. The Kevlar sleeve inside the cable carries a weight up to 600 lbs. (272 kgs) allowing for reeling under emergency conditions.

ACCESSORIES

Every system can be modified at a later date or integrated with various accessories and for the standard production and for customer specific needs. Simple adaptation in the field ensures an effective operation without delay. No additional cables are necessary since all accessories are supplied via the main coaxial cable. Here are some examples:

Manipulative pliers. Custom designed for every task, the manipulators vary from heavy duty gripers with a strong claw motor for the recovery of casualties to a telescope arm with pan and tilt mechanism and a claw with camera for precise grips.

Depth meter with on screen display. A digital depth meter can be provided. The display might be displayed from the picture to receive an undisturbed camera picture.

Side cameras color or black & white

Stills camera. All pressure housings are constructed in the specific size for every camera. A separate housing for the flash light avoids reflections on the camera window. The release is remote controlled from the surface unit.

360 degrees rotating cameras

Extra power motors (700 W or more). For R.O.V.'S, operating mainly in strong currents and bigger depth, thrusters with a power of up to 900 W can be mounted. They are also recommended for systems with long cable where the propulsion speed plays an important role.

Video camera with zoom lens. Instead of the standard camera, any other suitable video camera can be mounted. Highly sensitive low light cameras, black and white cameras or digital cameras and camcorders can be adapted. Up to 4 parallel cameras give a wide view. The video images can be displayed synchronized on several TV monitors or be switched to one screen.

Single beam sonar for automatic depth control or a horizontal target sonar supports the navigation in water with bad visibility. The combination of both gives a perfect and cost-effective double sonar. Sonars with ranges from 30-90 m are available. The signal is displayed at the right edge of the video image, a second monitor is not necessary.

Digital compass. Instead of the standard compass, a digital compass can be mounted. The digits are diplayed in the video picture on the screen. The compass picture can be switched of completely, which gives the advantage to display the compass information from the picture if desired.

Many existing systems can be adapted to our R.O.V. Depending on the construction of these systems, their signals will be radio-frequency modulated transmitted via the single coaxial cable or may be transmitted via a special cable with many conductors. Sonar, magnetometer, low light camera or pan and tilt unit are just some examples of ingenious adaptations. The mechanical work as well as the change of buoyancy are obviously included. Even if no existing system should be adapted, every instrument is planned together with the customer for his applications. So special requirements will be considered and needless modules, increasing cost, can be avoided.
